Length Retention 101
One of the most pressing matters most people face when growing out their hair is retaining length. Hair, unfortunately, doesn’t grow overnight. Who knew!? In a time when gratification and obvious results must be instant, trying natural methods to grow out our hair makes us impatient. There are tricks to help your hair grow a bit faster and a whole lot healthier.
TAKE THESE STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR LENGTH RETENTION:
- Stop using shampoos and conditioners with sulfates. Hair needs moisture, and sulfates work really hard to suck moisture out of the hair. Honestly, if you have curlier hair, don’t shampoo unless it’s entirely necessary. Natural hair tends to be drier than most hair types and it needs as much moisture as possible. Moisture is one of the key components of retaining a healthy length.
2. Alternate deep conditioning treatments and strengthening treatments weekly. Deep conditioners are your best friend. It’s all just good stuff for your hair, the most important one being intense moisture. Strengthening treatments are necessary to rebuild the keratin in the hair and increase its overall strength and shine. Using the two consistently will result in stronger, healthier hair from root to tip.
3. Don’t be scared of oils. They have tons of benefits for the hair and scalp and usually offer nourishing effects that help create a healthier scalp. As we know, a healthy scalp will lead to longer, healthier hair over time. It’s just a matter of finding the right one for your hair! There are even oils that help stimulate growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp! The best part is, they’re all-natural and non-toxic.
4. Clarify! This is probably the only time I’ll ever tell you guys to shampoo your hair. Clarifying shampoos are like reset buttons for your hair and scalp. They get rid of all the buildup and gunk that could be weighing your hair down and stumping its growth. Try adding a clarifying shampoo to your routine at least once a month.
5. Avoid heat styling. Unless you’re taking extra precautions to protect it, applying heat to the hair is never good for it. It stumps the growth exponentially because the heat basically kills the hair. Be gentle with it, show it some TLC, and avoid hot tools if you can!
6. Trim your hair! Getting rid of split ends a great way to help retain length. It keeps the hair looking and feeling thicker and healthier. It’s a myth that it makes your hair grow faster, but it certainly improves the way it feels and prevents split ends from traveling up the hair shaft. If you let split ends go, they’ll keep traveling upward, damaging even more of your hair, which would cause you to need to cut even more hair off. Stick to a regular trimming schedule to avoid extreme damage.
Quick Recap
HAIR GROWTH
- Hair growth is a cycle that takes time. Next time you’re wondering why your hair is taking so long to grow, take comfort in the fact that your hair is always growing. Hair is constantly going through growth cycles;
- if you can’t notice a change in length it’s not because there is no growth, but because the hair is breaking at a faster rate than it’s growing.
-
You can’t grow your hair out overnight (shocker, I know. I was surprised when I found out too) but you can take steps to stimulate the growth. Try using a scalp stimulating hair growth oils, to help boost blood flow. Always dilute it! Check out our range of growth-stimulating products too!
-
Everyone sheds hair. We’re mammals, you know. People shed an average of 100 hairs a day, so don’t worry if there are a few hairs on your comb. As long as they have that little white bulb at the end, you’ll know that it was shed completely naturally.
-
Breakage is a sign of distress. The hair is crying for you to give it more of what it needs. Breakage is a relatively easy fix and just requires a good balance of moisture and protein. Over some time, the hair will rebuild and be much stronger.
-
Edges and baby hairs are super delicate and need to be treated delicately. Wear satin bonnets and scarves, avoid super tight hairstyles, and take the time to massage the scalp if you feel that they’re thinning.
-
Massage your scalp often if you want your hair to grow. Increasing blood flow to the scalp will increase the number of nutrients and oxygen the hair follicles receive, causing healthy growth.
-
The kinky, curly hair at the nape of your neck is nothing to be ashamed of. Yes, it can be hard to care for, but it’s not impossible. And we think you look pretty great regardless. 🙂
